General Information
The District headquarters is Virudhunagar town. It covers an area of 4232 sq. km. and is divided into 8 taluks, namely Aruppukkottai, Kariapatti, Rajapalayam, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputur, Tiruchuli and Virudhunagar.
The District is divided into two Revenue Divisions comprising four taluks each. The Aruppukkottai Revenue Division comprises Kariapatti, Tiruchuli, Aruppukkottai and Virudhunagar taluks, and Sivakasi Revenue Division of Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputur and Rajapalayam taluks.
There are 6 Assembly Constituencies in the District. 209. Rajapalayam Assembly Constituency is reserved for the scheduled castes. 204. Aruppukkottai, 205. Sattur, 206. Virudhunagar, 207. Sivakasi and 208. Srivilliputur are the other Assembly Constituencies. There are 2 Parliamentary Constituencies in the District. Aruppukkottai Assembly Constituency falls within 34. Ramanathapuram Parliamentary Constituency and 35. Sivakasi Parliamentary Constituency extends over all the other five Assembly Constituencies and also includes 212. Kovilpatti Assembly Constituency in Tuticorin District.
There are 6 Municipalities Aruppukkotai, Virudhunagar, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputur and Rajapalayam, 11 Panchayat Unions, 10 Town Panchayats, 450 Village Panchayats and 598 villages of which 506 are inhabited and 92 are uninhabited.

Sivakasi, a town famous for fireworks & printing press, match boxes is about 27 kilometers from Virudhunagar.The great saint Ramana Maharshi was born in Tiruchuli, a place near Virudhunagar. Mariamman Kovil, Vezhilugandha amman kovil are famous temples in Virudhunagar. Every year during the Tamil month of Panguni, the famous Panguni Pongal festival is celebrated in a special way. Relatives and friends gather together during the Pongal, Kairu Kutthu, Agni Chatti and Theerottam functions and they go around the town. Virudhunagar Exhibition conducted in the KVS School premises during summer holidays attracts many people from the nearby towns and village. The exhibition also serves as a matrimonial center. The other unique tradition about Virudhunagar is that, for the marriage function, the bride and the groom will have a separate function/marriage hall.

In 1985, the erstwhile Ramanathapuran District was bifurcated to create the districts of Ramanathapuram Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar Tirumagan (laler renamed Sivaganga) and Kamarajar District (later renamed Virudhunagar District). Virudhunagar exports all kinds of Edible oil to Dubai, Srilanka and also exports Cotton, chili. Spices, cardamom to USA and Singapore. Virudhunagar is a famous business centre without markets. The people of Virudhunagar play an important role in price fixation of consumer products. Hence there is a popular saying, virudhunagar produces nothing but controls everything.
Virudhunagar was a part of Tirunelveli district before 1910, after which it became a part of Ramanathapuram district. After being grafted out as a separate district during 1985 ,today it has eight taluks under its wings namely Aruppukkottai, Kariapatti, Rajapalayam, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputur, Tiruchuli and Virudhunagar.
