Virudhunagar is a city and a municipality in Virudhunagar district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Virudhunagar is a small town located at a distance of 45 Km South-West of Madurai. In 1985, the erstwhile Ramanathapuran District was bifurcated to create the districts of Ramanathapuram Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar Tirumagan (laler renamed Sivaganga) and Kamarajar District (later renamed Virudhunagar District). The District headquarters is Virudhunagar town. It covers an area of 4232 sp. km. and is divided into 8 taluks, namely Aruppukkoltai, Kariapatti, Rajapalayam, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputtur, Tiruchuli and Viriudhunagar.
Virudhunagar exports all kinds of Edible oil to Dubai, Srilanka and also exports Cotton, chili. Spices, cardamom to USA and Singapore. Virudhunagar is a famous business centre without markets. The people of Virudhunagar play an important role in price fixation of consumer products. Hence there is a popular saying, virudhunagar produces nothing but controls everything.
Virudhunagar was a part of Tirunelveli district before 1910, after which it became a part of Ramanathapuram district. After being grafted out as a separate district during 1985 ,today it has eight taluks under its wings namely Aruppukkottai, Kariapatti, Rajapalayam, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputur, Tiruchuli and Virudhunagar.
