Trichy
One of the important city amongst the many in Tamil nadu. This city is located on the Bank of River Cauvery. The Transportation centre of Tamil nadu Tamil nadu, Trichy is an important place for Tourism as it contains fine temples and important historical monuments.Dominantly important -Rockfort has given the name to it as Rock city.
Situated on the banks of river Kaveri Trichy also known as tiruchirappalli is a fine blend of temples and monuments. It is a pilgrim centre, 325 kms from Madras, dominated by the granite rock soaring 84 metres into the skyline. It is also famous for artificial diamonds, cigars, handloom cloth, glass bangles and wooden and clay toys.
The fourth largest city in the state was a citadel of the Early Cholas which later fell to the Pallavas. Trichy lies 320 km to the south of Chennai, on the banks of the Cauvery. Trichy itself, has a long history, going back to the centuries before the Christian era, when it was a Chola citadel. Trichy encompasses Srirangam, the foremost Vaishnavite temple and the biggest functioning Hindu temple in the world. Trichy also emcompasses "ThiruAnaikka" one of the five main abodes of Lord Shiva. ThiruvAnaikkaval is the house of Water.
The name of the town, "Tiruchirapalli", originated as a tribute to a Jain monk called "Chira": Tiruchirapalli means the town of respected Chira. It also means 'Thiru ShriRanganathan Palli', which means "the place where Shri Ranganatha reclines". 'Thiru' means respected, 'ShriRanganathan' denotes Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam and 'Palli' means reclining posture of the Lord. The 'ShriRanganathan' has got morphed and/or got shortened to "chira" over the passage of time. Not only, has rockfort added waitage to this place.Golden rock locomotive workshop, BHEL, an ordinance factory and the Regional engineering college are some other things which are famous land marks.
When vijayanagar dynasty ended and mughals came to throne, this city was under their control for some years. But only during the rule of viswanatha nayaha a vijayanagar emperor in AD 1736, the rockfort temple and teppakulam were built. After the death of Vijayanagar Empire mughals were ruling this place with the help of French English armies. The important mughl emperors was Chandra sahib mohammed ali. But, when British started establishing their powers in India, this city was also taken by them and was ruled for more than 150 years till Independence.
