Tiruvannamalai

Tiruvannamalai District is known for eternal peace and divine with the proud possession of the sacred shrine of Lord Arunachaleswara and Ashrams. It had started functioning as a separate district from 30th September 1989, on bifurcation of the erstwhile North Arcot District. Tiruvannamalai District is one of the 30 districts of the state of Tamil Nadu, in South India, and. Its district headquarters are at the town of Tiruvannamalai. The district is divided into 6 taluks/seats: Chengam, Tiruvannamalai, Polur, Arani, Vandavasi and Cheyyar. Arani is famous for silk sarees. The district had a population of 2,186,125 as of 2001. It is 18.33% urbanised.

Tiruvannamalai District has an area of 6,191 km˛. It is bounded on the north by Vellore District, on the east by Kanchipuram District, on the south by Villupuram District, and on the west by Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. Tiruvannamalai is one of the panchabhootasthalas representing the fire element along with Chidambaram, Sri Kalahasti, Thiruvanaikoil and Kanchipuram representing sky, air, water and earth respectively. As much as four Brahmotsavams are celebrated ever year, the one celebrated during the Tamil month of Karthigai (November/December) is the most famous. The ten day event culminates on the day of Karthigai Deepam. That evening, a huge lamp is lit on a cauldron with three tons of ghee at the top of the Annamalai hills.

Thiruvannamalai is one of the major sacred places of Tamil Nadu, It is impossible to ignore this because of the great area occupied by the Siva temple, the many processing, and the frequent festivals, especially that of Kartigai, the festival of fire, which more then doubles the population. This influx of pilgrims is received in cboultries or hostels, most of which are situated in the north and south car-street.

Another aspect of the temple which has determined the physical form of the town was the construction of the fourth and fifth enclosures. This important extension caused the relocation of residences, especially of brahmins who usually live around the temple in the square formed by the four car-streets.
