Thanjavur - General Information

Thanjavur district had 11 taluks in 1951 which subsequently increased to 12, then to 13 and 16 during 1961, 1971, and 1981 Censuses respectively. At present this district stands divided into 3 divisions contains 8 Taluks. The district represent 10 Assembly constituencies of which one are reserved for Scheduled Caste. There is, however no reserved constituency for scheduled Tribes.

Thanjavur, is a Parliamentary Constituency consists of 6 Assembly segments Valangaiman assembly constituency is reserved for Scheduled Castes. The district is located in the centre-east of the state, bounded on the northeast by Nagapattinam District, on the east by Tiruvarur District, on the south by the Palk Strait, on the west by Pudukkottai District, and on the north by the river Kollidam, across which lie Tiruchirappalli and Perambalur districts.

The flat northern part of the district includes part of the river Kaveri delta. It is irrigated by an elaborate system of dams, cuts and canals in connection with the Kaveri and its chief distributary, the Kollidam. These two rivers and the lesser distributaries run from west to east. The soil is exceedingly productive, and the staple crop is rice. The delta region is highly cultivated, dotted over with groves of coconut trees (one of the largest producers of coconut in Tamil Nadu), and is one of the most densely populated tracts in India. On account of its fertility it has been called the "Granary of Southern India". The city of Thanjavur lies on the southern bank of the river Kaveri near the center of the district. Other cities and towns include Kumbakonam, Madukkur, Papanasam, Semmangudi, Swamimalai, Thiruvaiyaru, Pattukottai, Peraurani, Orathanad, Tiruvidaimaruthur, Tiruvonam and Adirampattinam.

During 2001 Census, the district comprised 3 municipalities, 22 Town Panchayats and 904 Revenue villages.

Thanjavur District lies as the East Coast of Tamil Nadu. It is situated between 9 50’ and 11 25’ of the northern latitude and 78 45’ and 70 25’ of the Eastern longitude. It extents to an area of 3396.57 sq.kms. The District is bounded on the north by the Coloroon which separate it from Perambalur and Tiruchirappalli district, and on the East it is bounded by the Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, and on the South by the Palk Strait and Pudukottai district and on the West by Pudukkottai and Thiruchirappalli districts.

The district can be divided into two distinct division, viz., the deltaic region, the upland area or on-deltaic region. The deltatic region covers the whole northern and eastern portions of the district where the Cauvery with its wide network of branches irrigate more than half of the district. It comprises the whole of Kumbakonam taluk and parts of Thanjavur, Papanasam taluks. The rest of the southern and western areas of the district are non-deltaic or upland region. A good portion of upland regions which was dry has now been brought under irrigation with the help of Grand Anaicut canal, fed by the Cauvery-Mettur Project and by extension of the Vadavar river. Non-deltaic region is also devoid of hills and slopes gradually seawards.

In Thanjavur District, the district literacy rate is 57.54 % (Aged 7 and above) the literacy among males and females are 67.08% and 47.94%. The annual District Statistical Abstract for 1998-99 reveals that there are 1100 primary 217 middle and 198 High / Higher Secondary Schools in the district. Further, 20 matriculation schools are also functioning in this district. The major important Government Hospitals are Thanjavur Medical College Hospital and Raja Mirasudar Hospitals located in Thanjavur and a Government Head Quarters Hospital at Kumbakonam. Apart from these there are also 6 taluk and 6 taluk run by the Government.
