Madurai is a major center of higher learning that houses some of India's oldest institutions. The American and Madura Colleges are two such institutions that are living tributes to a century-old legacy. The city has a Medical College, Madurai Medical College (MMC) set up in 1954, an Agricultural College and a Law College. The Madurai Kamaraj University[7] situated in Nagamalai Pudukottai, Madurai was set up in 1966 with 18 schools, which in turn is made up of 72 departments. It pioneered the concept of Distance Education throughout India, and its Directorate of Distance Education currently boasts of a student strength of about 130,000. Several other Arts and Science colleges are present in and around the city, affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University.
The city also has its share of Engineering Colleges, Polytechnics, Paramedical and Nursing Colleges. This city has got one of the oldest and premier Engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu, Thiagarajar College of Engineering situated in Thirupparankundram, and the city has got some of the private engineering colleges, such as K.L.N College Of Engineering and Technology situated in Pottapalayam, 11kms from Madurai Railway station, Yadava college of Arts & science in Natham road , Raja College of Engineering and Technology. Not to miss Winways - Research & Training Center for Open Source, the first of its kind organization working for the spread of Open Source ideology. Many students from madurai go to Chennai and other parts of the state to study engineering.
Schools in Madurai are SBOA, Seventh Day Adventist, VHN Higher Secondary School, Jeevana, Mahatma Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School and VMJ Higher Secondary School. A notable school in madurai city is Sourashtra higher secondary school, which is very famous for its gorgeous and beautiful building, good and spacious play grounds and also gym. With studies the physical studies here is well known. The syllabus is mainly matriculational based in most schools though many schools offer state-board, ICSE and CBSE syllabus as well. Madurai is also home to Lady Doak College, which is located at Chinna Chokikulam Estd. in 1948, is the oldest college for women in south India. The undergraduate, postgraduate and research college offers degrees in Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Business Management Studies and Information Technology. Fatima College which is located near Koodal Nagar is also a well known college for women.
Also coming to technical education (Polytechnic studies) Tamilnadu polytechnic college is a notable one and also a famous government institution offering Diploma courses in Civil, mechanical, electrical, polymer, plastic and also computer studies. And in catering Subbulakshmi lakshmipathy college leads in a good way in educating their students in hospitality line.
