Madurai
Madurai District is situated in the South of Tamil Nadu state. It is bounded on the North by the districts of Dindigul, Thiruchirapalli and on the East by Sivagangai and on the West by Theni and South by Virudhunagar . The City Madurai and the temple are more than 3600 years old. Till the 14th century A.D. Madurai was the permanent capital of Pandia Kings. Though commenced by the Pandia king Kulasekara Pandian, the temple was completed during the reign of the Nayakkar King from the 16th to 18th century A.D.
Madurai pronunciation is a city and a municipal corporation with a population of more than 1.3 million people. It is situated on the banks of River Vaigai in Madurai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the second biggest city in the state of Tamil Nadu. The nearest major cities are Coimbatore and Trichy. Madurai has a rich cultural heritage passed on from the great Tamil era more than 2500 years old, and has been an important commercial centre even as early as 550 AD. Madurai was the capital city of the Pandya kings of South India. Madurai is the headquarters of Madurai district.
In the post-Independence era, Madurai District, headquartered at Madurai City , was one of the largest districts of Tamil Nadu. It was also the administrative headquarters of the neighboring Ramanathapuram District. However, in 1984, the then huge Madurai district was bifurcated into Madurai and Dindigul District for administrative convenience. Again, in 1997, it was bifurcated into Madurai and Theni District. Like all other districts of India, it is administered by a District Collector, a person from the Indian Administrative Service.
