Kanchipuram - Sankara Mutt
Kanchipuram is also the seat of the Kanchi matha, a religious institution that became influential and famous under the leadership of Shri Chandrashekarendra Saraswati. This matha says that Adi Sankara settled in Kanchipuram after establishing four Amnaya mathas in the four corners of India and that this gave rise to the Kanchi matha. However this claim is disputed by the four original mathas who claim the Kanchi matha is only a branch matha. The followers of Kanchi math however claim that this Matha was temporarily shifted to Kumbakonam because of which it was known as Kumbakonam Matha for sometime, and that later the Matha shifted back to Kanchipuram.
Sri Sankara mutt is very important Place. It has a unique importance in the spirital world. It is situated in Mutt street, near Palakkarai, bank of cauvery. Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham was established by Sri Adi Sankara in the year 482 B.C. and has the distinction of an unbroken line of 70 Acharyas.
The matha's official history states that it was founded by Adi Shankara of Kaladi, and that Jayendra Saraswati is its 69th head in succession, tracing its history back to the fifth century BCE. A related claim is that Adi Shankara came to Kanchipuram, and that he established the Kanchi matha in a position of supremacy over the other mathas of the subcontinent, before his death there. Other sources give the place of his death as Kedarnath in the Himalayas.Other historical accounts state that the matha was established much more recently (probably in the 18th century) in Kumbakonam, as a branch of the Sringeri Matha, and that it later declared itself independent. The heads of a matha in Kumbhakonam acquired control of the Kamakshi temple in Kanchipuram and moved their establishment to that city, between the years 1842 and 1863. This marks the origin of the Kanchi matha.
