Ketty Valley View
Located en route to Coonoor, this idyllic spot is a cluster of tiny villages that extend to the plains of Coimbatore and Mysore plateau.
Kalhatty Waterfalls
The beautiful Kolhatty waterfalls are about 100 feet in height and are located on the kalhatty slopes. The falls are about 13kms from the city, so anyone on a tour of Ooty can easily check out the falls and the beautiful area surrounding it. Besides, obviously looking at the waterfalls, you can explore the kalhatty-Masinagudi slopes, that are home to many wild species, including panthers, sambhar, bison and wild buffaloes.
Sim's Park
The Sim's Park is spread over an area of 12 hectares and is situated in Upper Coonoor. The park it is believed has more than 1000 plant species, including many flowering plants, pines, ferns and shrubs. If you are visiting in May, then you can attend the fruit and vegetable show, which is a tradition and is held annually.
Dolphin's Nose
If the name is not amusing enough for you, you can come down to this very Dolphin's nose and have a good time, enjoying games and an outdoor picnic. The Dolphin's nose is a great vantage point that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding areas. If it is clear day, you can even see the Catherine falls from here.
Mukurthi
About 36 km from Ooty is Mukurthi. Here you can take a look at the imposing Mukurthi peak. According to the Todas, the indigenous people of this locale, the souls of the dead move on to the next world from this very sacred place. It is an interesting place for the skeptics as the flora and fauna of this pace bears a striking resemblance to that found in Himalayan region. You can also visit the Mukurthi lake which is close to the peak and is worth a closer look. Mukurthi Peak is about 40 km from Ooty. The Mukurthi National park is located on the South Eastern corner of the Nilgiris plateau. The area contains a viable population of Nilfiti Thar (Hamitragus hilocrius). The Silent Valley is located on the Western side of these ranges. Fascinating feature of the Mukurthi Sanctuary is its endemism and relationship with Himalayan flora and fauna.
Avalanche
Avalanche lies 28 km from Ooty. Unlike it's name, which conjures up images of destruction and devastation, the place is a nature lover's paradise. It is a lake, which is ideal for fishing, though one has to obtain permission before hand. It is also the perfect place to enjoy bird watching and a quiet afternoon. Avalanche, known after an avalanche in the area in 1823. This is one of the best spots for trout fishing, and rods can be hired here from the trout hatchery. A 7 km walk from Avalanche is the MacIvor's Bund. Ahead of this is Mukerti Peak, at an altitude of 8031 feet, which is also a part of Nilgiri Tahr Sanctuary, created in the most remote part of the mountains. An abundance of a wide variety of avifauna makes it a Nature Lover's Paradise.
Pykara (21 km)
Situated on the Ooty Mysore Road it boasts of fenced Shola and Toda settlements, undisturbed grassy meadows and also a good wildlife habitat. The Pyakara Dam and the reservoir attract many tourists. Situated at a distance of 19 kms. from Ooty, the river has a dam and a power plant. The great charm of the place is its perfect serenity, sparkling atmosphere and enchanting surroundings. The falls, about 6km from the bridge on the main road, are best in July. There is a forest Rest House and a boat House with Restaurant is at Pykara. .Boats are available for hire in Pykara dam.
Glenmorgan (17 km)
An Electricity Board van carries staff from Glenmorgan viewpoint to the power house at Singara. All the four km of the winch track pass through undisturbed Sholas and wildlife habitat. Prior permission of E. B. authorities should be obtained to enter the viewpoint zone.
Upper Bhavani
10 km from Korakundah and about 20 km from Avalanche. From Bangithappal via Sispara one can trek to the Silent Valley.
Wenlock Downs
A vast expanse of undulating landscape offers the pleasure of long stroll on quiet roads. Gymkhana Club, the government Sheep Farm and Hindustan Photo Films Company are important landmarks here.
