Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the oldest mountain railways in India. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was declared by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in July 2005. This railway links Coonoor to the town of Mettupalayam at the foot of the hills. Coonoor was the original termination point of this railway, before the line was extended to Ooty.

Lamb's Rock

A sheer precipice which drops down several hundred metres into the heart of dense jungle, 5.5 km away. It is 8 Kms from Coonoor on the way to Dolphin's Nose. It commands a grand view of the Coimbatore Plains. It is a favourite place for tourists.

Dolphin's Nose

Enjoy the micro climate of the shoal forest here, 12 km away from Coonoor. Dolphin’s Nose around 10 km. away from Coonoor is an excellent viewpoint. It encompasses the Catherine Falls. Lambs nose is another point on the way to Dolphins Nose that too exposes a vast panorama. The Nose is a unique rock of tremendous proportions which looks like a Dolphin.

Kodanad View Point

It is about 16 kms. from Kotagiri on the eastern edges of the Nilgiris. On either side of the road one can see the panoramic view of the tea estates and the river Moyar is breath taking. A watch tower is there to view the panoramic view of Rangasamy peak and pillar. From Kotagiri bus services are available.

Park cum Botanical Garden

This has many species of trees not found in Ooty.

Sim's Park

Is carefully planned and artistically laid. A Fruit and Vegetable show is held here in May every year. Sim’s Park is a 12-hectare park in Coonoor, which exhibits over 1000 species of plants. On the road opposite the Sim’s Park is the Pasteur Institute. It is renowned for its research in the study of rabies. The park is situated in a deep ravine on the Northern side of Coonoor Railway Station at an elevation of 1768 to 1798 mts. The park can be divided into eight major sections. The natural shola with winding footpaths all over the higher slopes of the park is the most distinctive and picturesque feature of this park. This apart a number of individual tree specimens planted in a scattered fashion all over the place, lend a special charm to the park, specially when they bloom in different seasons throughout the year.

Wellington Staff College

On the way to Coonoor from Ooty is Wellington, the military town with rows and rows of barracks. The headquarters of the Madras Regimental Centre, the Indian Army and the Defence Staff College are located here.

Law's Falls and St. Catherine's Falls

The Place is a beautiful picnic spot, situated at Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road at the distance of 7 Kms from Coonoor. The height of the falls is about 180 feet. There are vast stretches of undisturbed sholas and it is a paradise for Naturalists. Cascading down 180 feet, these are a paradise for naturalists. From Dolphin's Nose of Coonoor one can have a magnificent view of St. Catherine Water falls which is about 250 feet height. But it can be reached from Kotagiri at a distance of 8 kms. To reach the top of the hills tourist should take a diversion at Aravenu on Kotagiri - Mettupalayam road.

Pasteur Institute

Located opposite to the Sim's Park, this institute was established in 1907. It is a famous Institute doing research on Rabbies and giving effective treatment to persons bitten by a rabid animals. One of the most important projects of this Institute is the manufacture of Polio Vaccine. For More Details +91- 423 - 2236289

Pomological Station

This is one of the three experimental fruit gardens in the Nilgris maintained by the Horticultural Department. The other two are Burliar and Kallar on the Coonoor - Mettupalayam ghat road. Apples, Plums, Peaches, Persinments, Lemons, Apricots and Pomogranates are grown here for the purpose of research. Surplus fruits and fruit based jams are sold to the public.

Silk Rearing Station

Adjoining the Pasteur Institute there is a Silk Rearing Station maintained by the Central Silk Board. The Sericultural experts at this station may be contacted for special assistance.

Lady Caninng's Seat

From Coonoor it is 9 Kms. It is marked by a small house and commands panoramic view of the tea estates and the plains.
