There are many temples in and around the city. Sri Kottai Mariamman Temple, It is more than 200 years old. The Mariamman idol is said to be installed by the army men of Tippu Sultan at the foot of the mountain. The temple is constructed in the shape of a square. There is a temple for Vetri Vinayaka at the South & Lord Muruga at the North of this temple. There is a Mandapam Hall in the center of the ground in which there is a sculpture of a Lion facing the Sannidhi. The Sanctum is small & square shaped. There are several sculpture on the sniper structure over the. Sanctum Sanctorum, depicting various incarnations of the goddess Mariamman. Sri Chella Mariamman Temple, A. B. Nagar which is 2 km from the city.

Palani,where one of the Six abodes of Lord Muruga, Dhandayuthapani Temple is situated on the hilly rock at a height of about 450 mts. Th place is at about 56 km from the City. Another Murugan temple at Thirumalaikeni,is at 25 km away from Dindigul town . Abirami Amman temple in in the town and Raja Kaliamman Temple at Thethupatti, 20 km away from Dindigul are the other important Temples which attracts many pilgrims. Sri Soundaraja perumal temple, well known for its Sculptures is at a village, Thadikombu, 8 km away from the city on the National Highway No. 7. Kasavai Mouna Nirvaana Swamighal Aaalayam (God of silence) Situated in Kasavanampatty Village, 14 KM west from the dindigul. It is very nearby the The Famous Western Ghats of India.

Palani Murugan Temple

The temple was constructed in the period of Chera Kings rule of South Kongu Nadu. In the epigraphs found in the Karpagraham dated 13th century it is known that Pandiyan Kings, Chola Kings also contibuted much for the festivals of this temple and worshiped Lord Muruga.

There is also a book named Thalapuranam ( Temple History ) of 400 pages published at the Lord Muruga Worship and Tamil Cult conference which deals in detail about Palani and Murugan. The conference proceedings will be published soon. Deligates from various part of the world participated in the conference and presented papers about Palani and Murugan.

People arrving Palani by walking all long the way. This is known as "Paadha Yathirai" - means "Holy walk". Chain of people reaching Palani from all the direction. Usually people around 250Km perform this Holy walk. People arrive Palani starting from 10 days before Thai Poosam festival. Buses were diverted from the roads reaching Palani inorder to facilitate the piligrims.

While walking people chat, listen to walkman ( listening Bajans ), groups singing Bajans, etc.,, Usually people carry their homemade food on their head. The piligrims wear green or saffron or yellow color clothes. Small shops sell drinking water and snacks became usual bussiness during Thai Poosam festival. For more details ....

KODAIKKANAL - A Beautiful Hill Resort

With its temperate, climate and an average of 12 hours sun every day, Kodaikkanal is one of the most popular hill resorts in India. The splendor of the summer day is never so gorgeous as in Kodaikkanal. It is a lovely hill resort on the Palani hills in the Dindigul district of TamilNadu. With its rocks, woods and woodland ways, lovely lake and bracing air, Kodaikkanal is an ideal hill resort for the tourists. The Kodaikkanal Observatory, surmounting the hill is one of the most important and the only one of its kind institutions in India for the study of meteorology, solar physics and allied subjects.

The 24 - hectare lake skirted by a 5km long block for road, is the focal point of Kodai. This lake was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge (1819 - 1885) who was previously the Collector of Madurai, who retired and settled in Kodai. He constructed the bund to form a lake and stocked the lake with fish. He brought the first boat from Tuticorin. In 1890, a boat club was formed and members of the club set sail. In 1910 a new boat house was constructed. The boat service was opened to the public and tourists as well in 1932. This park is situate d on the eastern side of the lake. It is noted for its flowers, hybrids and grafts. Cut flowers are exported from here. A glass house which shelters fine varieties of flowers can be seen here. The Flower Show is conducted every year during May, as part of the Summer Festival, should be seen everyone.
